Buying · Tactics

Three furniture sales tactics you keep falling for.

None of them are illegal. All of them work because a sofa is bought roughly twice in a lifetime.

Furniture retail runs on a customer who buys twice a decade and therefore has no reference prices. That is the condition every one of these tactics depends on.

One, the permanent discount

A price is set at 4,000 euros so that it can be sold at 2,400 during a sale that never really ends. The discount is real arithmetic on a number that was invented for the purpose. Check whether the same model has ever been sold at the reference price, and for how long.

Two, the invented fabric name

Proprietary fabric names exist to prevent comparison. Once a weave is called something exclusive, you cannot search it, cannot price it and cannot check it against another store. Ask for the technical values instead and the name stops mattering.

  • Ask: composition, weight in g/m², Martindale, pilling grade, cleaning code.
  • Ignore: collection names, invented material words, adjectives like artisan or signature.
  • Compare: two spec sheets side by side, not two swatch cards.
Anything that cannot be searched cannot be compared. That is usually the point.

Three, the free delivery that is not free

Free delivery frequently means kerbside drop-off, a two week window, no assembly and no removal of packaging. The real questions are whether they carry it into the room, whether they assemble it, whether they take the packaging away and what happens if it does not fit through the door.

One more signal worth knowing: a quoted lead time of eight to twelve weeks usually means the sofa is coming through a distributor, not from the workshop. Direct production typically lands in three to four weeks.

Questions answered

Common questions

How do I tell whether a furniture discount is real?
Ask how long the reference price was in effect and request an order confirmation showing it. Genuine promotions are time boxed and the store can evidence the previous price.
Why do stores invent their own fabric names?
Because a searchable technical specification lets you compare across retailers, and an exclusive name does not. Asking for composition, weight and Martindale restores the comparison.
Does a long lead time mean better craftsmanship?
Rarely. Eight to twelve weeks usually reflects a distribution chain with warehouse stages. A workshop selling directly generally builds and ships within three to four weeks.
