Volume 04 — The Sofa Sourcebook

The art of selecting a sofa, when you cannot touch it first.

Seven considerations — drawn from a decade of upholstering homes from Copenhagen to Kyoto — for the patient buyer sourcing online.

01.

Beyond the visual: the structural integrity test.

When buying online you cannot touch the grain. Look for kiln-dried hardwood frames — oak, ash or beech — joined with double-dowelled, glued and corner-blocked construction. Avoid particleboard or staple-only assembly. A sofa is only as permanent as its skeleton.

02.

The fabric paradox: performance versus heritage.

Does luxury require fragility? Not anymore. Modern performance linens and bouclés — measured in Martindale rub counts above 40,000 — bridge daily life with the soft matte finish of an Italian villa. Always order swatches and observe them in your own light before you decide.

Navigating the great fit, from your phone.

Measure twice, order once. Tape out the footprint on your floor in painter's tape before checkout. Confirm doorway width, stair turns and lift dimensions against the shipped-carton size — not the assembled sofa. Modular pieces are forgiving; one-piece frames are not.

Silhouette is a posture, not a style.

Seat depth dictates how you live with a sofa. Twenty-two inches encourages an upright, formal posture; twenty-four to twenty-eight invites reclining. Decide whether the piece is for conversation, reading or weekend sprawl — then let the silhouette follow that intention.

Furni.io recommends

05.

Choosing colour without ever seeing it.

Screens lie about depth. Order at least three swatches — one lighter than your instinct, one darker — and pin them to the wall for three days. Observe morning, midday and evening light. The shade that holds its composure across all three is the shade to commit to.

06.

The quiet evidence of craft.

Run your eye along the seams. Tight, evenly-spaced piping; cushions that zip and reverse; pattern matched across panels — these are the small signals of a sofa built to be repaired, not replaced. Ask the brand whether covers are removable and replaceable. The answer should be yes.

07.

The arrival: what the listing rarely tells you.

Read the delivery clause before you read the price. White-glove service should include unpacking, assembly in the room of your choice, and packaging removal — not curbside drop. Confirm the lead time on made-to-order pieces; twelve to fourteen weeks is the honest answer.

Considered Questions

The questions we are most often asked.

Measure the narrowest doorway, hallway and stairwell turn. Compare against the shipping carton dimensions on each product page — not the assembled sofa. Furni modular pieces ship in single-cushion modules to clear standard urban doorways and lifts.

A well-made linen with a Martindale rub count above 40,000 will perform for fifteen to twenty years of daily use. Bouclé wears similarly but should be vacuumed weekly. We offer re-cover service for every Furni sofa, so the frame outlasts the fabric.

Yes. Registered interior designers and architects receive priority swatch fulfilment, dedicated project management, and a trade discount that scales with project volume. Apply through the Atelier portal.

Stock pieces return within 30 days, white-glove collection included. Made-to-order pieces — anything in a custom dimension, fabric or finish — are final sale, which is why we send unlimited swatches before any custom order is placed.

Stock collections ship within two weeks. Heirloom and made-to-order pieces are crafted in twelve to fourteen weeks. You'll receive a dedicated delivery concierge from week ten onwards to schedule your white-glove arrival.
